In The Nick Of Time, D'Jais Rallies Past Maynard's 9-5 to Secure the League's Final Playoff Spot. Time was running out on D'Jais season, trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the 4th. Maynard's pitcher Hadar Sieradzky was keeping their 3 (league leading) amigos in check. After 3 innings, Spotto, Auerbach and Crimmins had only combined for 1 hit. But in the Nick of time, Nick Adams wakes them up with a pair of doubles and Paul Martino proves that the homerun last week was surely no fluke. He bounced a deep double off the fence, putting D'Jais on the board in the bottom of the 4th. Then came the shot heard round the lake as Keith Lewis laced a 2 out double over the center fielder's head. Two more big runs scored as Keith tried to stretch a triple; he was nailed at third. But you could feel the momentum change as the sleeping giants finally awake. It's the top of the 5th and Maynard's is up just 5-3. The good news for Manyard's was they had their top of the order due up and could gain back some momentum. The bad news was; it didn't happen. With 2 outs Brian Cass reached on error and Mike Citron(3-4) singled, but the spark fizzled when the next batter popped out. Now let's flash back to the 1st when Maynard's was looking sharp and in control of this game. Although their 1st two batters made outs, Brian Cass singled, Mike Citron singled and Jack Berkowitz singled to load the bases for Ed Russnow. Ed delivers a cluch, 2 out, bases loaded, we need this game, single, to score the first two runs. Ron Liebowitz doubled off the fence in the 2nd but didn't score and in the 3rd inning Kay Kiele singled, Ryan Smith walked, Brian Cass crushed a single to load the bases for Mike Citron who drove in 2 more. Ed Russnow, who could have been the MPV if Maynard's won, comes through again with a double to give Maynard's its 5th, and final run. They only managed 5 more hits over the next 4 innings as D'Jais Paul Martino was getting in his groove. Now let's get back to the bottom of the 5th where D'Jais trailing 5-3. With one out Mark Spotto(3-4) legs out a double to center, then Dave Auerbach steps in and could tie it with just one swing. But someone must have cut Daves hair last night because he just couldn't hit it out of the infield tonight. Now Jay Crimmins(2-3) wasn't about to let this season slip away, and singled to score Mark, cutting the lead to just 1. Brad Bennis singled, bringing up the recently jacked, Nick Adams. Nick jacked another double off the fence, scoring Jay and Brad Bennis and giving D'Jais their first lead of the night. With D'Jais up 6-5 Maynard's defense breaks down in the 6th. Two errors lead to a run, followed by a single from Sal Hakimi. D'Jais now has their 3 amigos on deck and only one out. Mark hits the Spotto in right center, scoring one run and bringing up Dave Auerbach with bases loaded and a chance to put this game in the books. Well tonight was his team's chance to carry the load, and with 2 now outs Jason Crimmins comes through with another RBI single. D'Jais is up 9-5 and Maynard's is down to their final 3 outs of the regular season. It starts off good as Kay Kiele singles and Ryan Smith blasts a double in the courts but the next two batters made outs and D'Jais slides into the playoffs. A humbled Dave Auerbach was busy celebrating his team's payoff birth when Nick Adams was asked to produce a urine sample. "He doesn't speak English", Dave said with a smile. D'Jais has one final game Saturday against Headliner's. It won't effect the playoff seedings but it will determine who leads the league in hits.Dave Auerbach and Mark Spotto are now tied at 44 each. Codos to Lou Coppa and Lee Kornblau who umped a solid game and Joel Orris for keeping score. We are all set for a great playoff next month.
