Game Highlights
It's Panda-monium in the Last Inning of the Rail Riders, Trash Panda Game. Rail Riders hang on to win 15-14. Great back and forth battle with some great and not so great plays plus a few bombs. This was a good one so let's do a play by play. The Pandas strike first after Jake Spielberger singled, Rob Gilbert(4-4) put one in the courts and Brad Bennis(3-4) doubled in 2. Rail Riders get one back after Jay Glickson(3-3) walked, moved to 2nd on a fly ball and scored on a single by Don Trifari(3-4). Pandas 2-1 after 1. Bottom of the 2nd and Riders get a break, with 2 outs Mark Fedele(2-3), Ron Liebowitz and Jim Watkins all single. Jay Glickson singles to tie the game and Kay Klele hits a high pop to short right. The ball is dropped and 3 runs score. Riders are up 5-2 after 2. Pandas get the breaks right back in the 3rd after 2 trashy plays by the Riders put 2 on with no outs. Rob Guilbert doubles off the fence and Brad Bennis launches a 3 run homer to put the Pandas up 6-5. Then another Rider error gets on that scored on a fielder's choice. Trash is up 7-5 after 3, No score in the 4th. Riders tie it in the 5th after Jay Glickson singled and scored on a single by Don Trifari. Jared Kuropatkin(3-4) singled and Don scored on a sac fly by Victor Cardona. Tied up 7-7 after 5. Pandas get 1 in the top of the sixth after Alex Lieberman's infield single, Mike Cafaro singled and Adam Handler hit a sac fly. Pandas are up 8-7. Then comes the pandamonium in the bottom of the 6th. Riders are down 1 and Dean Sottile works his 2nd walk with one out. Mark Fedele(2-3) singled up the middle and oh no, Ron Liebowitz walks to load the bases. Jim Watkins sacrifices himself with a strike out looking to stay out of the double play so it's bases loaded, top of the order, 8-7 Pandas. Jay Glickson hits a big double in the gap putting the Riders up 1. Kay Klele singled up the middle and another run scores. Don Trifari hits a ball off the fence scoring Jay, but Kay was not running and just made it to 3rd. Jared Kuropatkin singled up the middle to score a 5th run and the Riders are up 12-8 with Victor Cardona coming up. Vic gets a hold of one and it's a 3 run dinger, Riders are up 15-8 but can their defense hold. With one out Deron Green singled up the middle. Both Jake Spielberger and Ryan Smith both ground singles through the infield. Rob Guilbert lined to first and it just popped out of Dan Sottile's glove for a single. Now it's 15-10 and Brad Bennis is up with runners on 1st and 2nd. There's talk about walking Brad but with a 5 run lead the Riders pitch to Brad. Brad golfs at a low pitch and it's going, going and just past the reach of Jared Kuropatkins leap at the fence. Jared's elbow comes down on the side of Brian Cass's head and Brain is down for about 5 minutes. The home run cuts the lead to 2 with one out. The next batter lines to right but the left fielder's has it but oh no, it pops out and now the tying run comes up to the plate. Then comes the play that everyone was talking about after the game. Alex Lieberman drills a one hopper down the 3rd base line that Victor Cardona backhands over the bag, spins and throws a strike to first to get Alex out. 2 outs and a runner at 3rd. Reese Spielberger is up and hits a ball between short and third that Victor Cardona grabs, but Vic slips in the mud and rolls and tries to get up and throw to first but oh no, the ball goes into right field and the tying run comes all the way to 3rd. Now Rail Riders are up by one with two outs and Mike Cafaro rips a hard grounded up the middle, but the pitcher snags it and the game is finally over. It was a big win for the Rail Riders that may secure them a playoff spot based on tiebreakers if they can't win another one of their last 3 games. Kudos to Dean Sotile for leaf blowing off the field in the afternoon to make the game possible. Thanks to Lou Coppa and guest Greg George who stopped down to ump.
