Mets Dodge a Bullet and Stop a Late Patriot Charge with a 6-5 Win. The Mets were chipping away with 1 run per inning and built a 3-0 lead after 3 innings, mostly on the speed of David Plishka. David singled in the first inning and scored on a single by Derek Margiotta. In the second the first 3 Mets batters reached on singles, Rob Thomas(2-3), Matt Siekierka and Andrew Conroy(3-3) before Kevin Zabransky hit a sac fly but that was it. In the 3rd, with two outs Rick Beyer singled and David came in to run for Rick and scored on a double by Derek Margiotta(3-3). It's good to be young. Summerset picks up a run in the 5th when Lou Coppa singled and scored on a single by captain Chris Stappas. The Mets get 3 big insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th when Rick Beyer, both Dereks and Pete DeFrank all single and Matt Siekierka ambushes the Patriots with a 2 out, 2 RBI double that push the Mets lead to 6-1. It looked like the Mets may cruse to another win but the Patriots put together a last minute surge after Dave Auerback lead off the 7th inning with a single. RJ Leonard tripled to right center, Lou Coppa hit a sac fly and the Pats are down 6-3. Brett Hartman(3-3) singled (the book said he doubled?) and here comes the most critical play of the game. Mike Bedell hits a high chopper between 3rd and short, MV Pete can't make the play but shortstop Matt Siekierka fields the ball deep in the hole and makes a quick gun to second to just nip Brett Hartman who didn't slide. That was a big 2nd out because Chris Stappas follows with a double, Paul Martino singles and Kevin Dejong reaches on error to put the Pats down by just one with the tying run on 2nd and the top of the Patriot order coming up. Calvin Kwock singled down the line and they elect to hold the runner on third, he might have made it home. So the Pats have bases loaded, down by 1 and Dave Auerbach is on deck. But the Mets dodge a bullet and get the next batter to line out to left center. The Mets continue to roll and top the standings with a 6-1 record.
