Playaz Clinch 1st Round Bye on Laden Double. The Playaz Club rallied back twice to tie the game 10-10 in the bottom of the 4th off an Alex Conklin 3 run blast. Jim Laden's 5th inning double gave the Playaz a two run lead going into the 6th as the rains picked up on an already muddy field. The Playaz found themselves in a 5-0 hole after the top of the first inning. Cheers, batting 9 with two subs, rallied with two outs after a close play at second scored the first run. Mark Armelino started it with a single and with two outs Paul Martino(3-4) singled, then advanced to 2nd on the throw to third. Ken O'Brien walked and Eamon Lougham hit a ball in the hole that Ralph Aiello fielded cleanly but the throw over to second was just late allowing Bob Plishka to score the games first run. Ken Nemeth singled to center scoring two more and subs Mark Spotto and Clay Petry(4-4) both singled in runs giving Cheers a 5-0 lead. The Playaz battle back in the bottom of the 1st when Eric Rosenberg(3-3) singled, Shaun Spielberger(3-3) singled, then after an out Don Trifari doubled to left scoring Rosey. John Spielberger(3-3) singled in Shaun and Steve DeBlasio scored Don on a fielder's choice. Barry Davis(3-3) doubles down the line and Ralph Aiello singles scoring Steve to cut the lead to 5-4. Cheers bats go cold for two innings and the Playaz capitalize in the bottom of the 2nd. With one out Mike Levine singles and after the second out Eric Rosenberg singles to right. Shaun Spielberger knocks in Mike with a single to tie it and Alex Conklin singles to give the Playaz Club their first lead 6-5. In the bottom of the 3rd Playaz put up another when John Spielberger singled, Barry Davis singled and Ralph Aiello picks up his second hit and RBI, Playaz lead 7-5. With one out Cheers Bob Plishka walks followed by singles from Paul Martino and Ken O'Brien which scored one run. With two outs and Cheers trailing by one, Ken Nemeth triples down the right field line, just under the glove of Andy Boyer which ties the game and here come those pesky subs again. Mark Spotto singled in Ken, Clay Petry(4-4) stayed perfect and Mark Armelino singled in the 5th run of the inning, it's all Cheers now 10-7. The rain starts increasing and the game is now official if it gets called so the Playaz need to score quickly. But the bottom of the order is up and there are two quick outs before Eric Rosenberg started up a rally with a single to right. Shaun Spielberger dribbs one in the mud for a single and with runners on first and second, trailiing by 3, Alex Conklin steps into the box. Cheers pitches to Alex and bam, Alex blasts one up into the trees tying the game at 10-10. Don Trifari singles and then a crazy play with some LVC controversy. John Spielberger drills a bullet back to the pitcher and Paul Martino gets his glove on it and and the ball pops out twards the first base line. Paul makes a diving spin trying to catch John at first but the ball gets by and rolls up the right field line slowly in the mud, all the way past the shed and then on the edge of the grass. Don Trifari easly scores what appeared to be the go ahead run from first but the umps and commissioner meet to discuss the call and send Don back to third saying the ball went out of play. The next batter gounded out and were hearing talk about ending it in a tie because of the rain but the Commish lets them play on. In the top of the 5th Cheers Bob Plishka dribbles a slow roller half way to third that died in the muck for a lead off single. The ball was thrown to umpire Kevin Koonjy who was busy cleaning mud off softballs all night- thanks Kevin! With two outs Eamon Lougham(3-4) singled moving Bob to third but the Playaz D holds off any runs. Still tie 10-10 and Commish is talking again about ending in a tie if the Playaz don't score and the bottom half of the Playaz lineup is up. Barry Davis starts the inning off with a single and tags on a deep fly out by Ralph Aiello. Andy Boyer works a walk to bring up Jim Laden. Jim gets a hold of one and drills it deep into the left center gap for a two run double and the Playaz are up 12-10. Lee allow Cheers one more atbat and things get really interesting. Finally one of the subs makes before Clay Petry gets things going again with his 4th hit of the night. Mark Armelino drills one down the line and Clay tries to stretch it to third. A strong throw from the muddy manager John Spielberger goes over the cutoff man's head and right to his son Shawn at third who appears to tag Clay as he tries to step around the bag towards home. Clay is called out and a small discussion started but didn't get very far. With two outs Dave Plishka singles to right bringing up father Bob with two out and the tying run on first. Bob gets a hold of one while the entire Playaz team holds their breath and watches the muddy John Spielberger race back to the fence and make the final out. Playaz win 12-10 and clinch at least the 2 seed and 1st round playoff bye. Despite the muddy field both teams played error free ball and both teams had 20 hits. Cheers was missing their manager due to a shoulder injury but Rich was on the sideline and almost coached his team to victory. Five players were perfect at the plate tonight including 4 from the Playaz: Eric Rosenberg(3-3), The Spielberger family John and Shaun, both 3-3 and Barry Davis (3-3). For Cheers Clay Petry batting lefty no less, was a perfect 4-4 while Eamon Lougham and Paul Martino were 3-4.
