What Just Happened? Puleo's Comes Back with 9 in the bottom of the 7th. The Station was playing some excellent defense, especially Andy Reiser at 2nd base, and they built an 8-0 lead till the top of the 7th when some of the fans started to leave, wait till you hear what they missed. Dave Richmond(3-4) started things off in the top of the 1st for the station with a double down the left field line. The next batter grounded out to short and Dave took off for 3rd on the throw to 1st. The throw arrives late at third but the home plate umpire called Dave out and there was no appeal allow by the fielder umpire so the call stands. Don Trifari Jr(2-3) homered and the Station take a 1-0 lead. Puleo's tests Andy Reiser out at second with their first two batters and they don't score. Marty Eagan doubles to start the 2nd and scores on a single by Andy Reiser. The Station leads 2-0. Puleo's manages 2 hits in the 2nd but doesn't score. In the 3rd Dave Richmond(3-4) doubles again, Lance Zacker drops a single over 2nd, Don Jr(2-3) is walked on 4 pitches, Don Sr(2-3) singled to score Dave and Jim Morris drives a double in the left center gap, the Station is up 5-0. They add another in the 4th after Ralph Aiello led off with a triple and Andy Reiser singled him home. Another run in the 5th after Don Jr singled, when to second on a bobble and took third when he realized the 3rd baseman was backing up 2nd. Don Sr was walked intentionally, Jim Morris singled in Jr but the Station goes down 1,2,3. In the 6th Puleo's is still scoreless and the Station picks up just one again after Mike Levine singled, Larry Friedman singled, Lance Zacker singled in Mike but Al Puleo gets to big outs. The Station leads 8-0. They fail to score in the top of the 7th with two on and one out so they just have to hold off Puleo's one more inning. After 6 innings Puleo's has managed only 7 hits and no runs but things change quickly. Al Puleo starts the bottom of the 7th with a single, the next batter hits a one hopper right to Andy Reiser who turns to start an easy double play but the shortstop is not covering 2nd so they just get the out at first. That turned out to be a game changing play. Vince Wolleon singled and Al Puleo scored from second to break the shutout. Then the momentum started to change. Joel Orris dropped a single between the deep leaping shortstop and left center fielder, Cliff Neukrug dropped a single to right center, Dave Picon singled between 3rd and short and here comes the play of the game, after last weeks Station loss when a detached glove tipped a ball, you think it couldn't get any weirder. With bases loaded, one out, Chuck Puleo hits a ball that's fielded by the Station's shortstop deep on the grass, instead of throwing to second he sees the runner at 2nd had a bad jump and turns to fire to third but at the last second he sees that the 3rd baseman is still running for the bag and there are fans and children right behind third base (see photo) so he tries to hold back the throw to not injure any fans and the ball gets loose and rolls out of play over near where the tarp is stored. The umpires rule that even though this was the shortstop making the play they called it a throw from the outfield and gave everyone two bases, plating 3 runs and putting the batter at 3rd. The official ASA rules state that the runners should get the base they are going to plus one which should have resulted in only 2 runs. Not sure it would have mattered. The lead is now 8-5 with one out and Mark Spotto up. Mark singled to right center to score Chuck. The next batter hits into a fielder's choice so Puleo's is down to their last out and the tying run is at the plate in RJ Leonard. The Station elects to pitch carefully to RJ and with a full count RJ crushes an inside pitch to tie the game at 8. Al Puleo who started the inning reaches on error, Adam Steckelman singled to move Al Puleo to 3rd and with a 3-0 count Vince Wolleon singled to center to complete the improbable comeback.
