La Cosa Nostra Takes Home the Title with 6-3 Win in Game 2 of the Double Header. It seems like every double header series I can remember, whoever won game one, won game 2 also. The only exception was a triple header back in 2018 between the Playaz Club vs Cheers, where Cheers won game one, got blown out in game 2, and won game 3. This series was suposed to be just one game on day one, then a second and possible 3rd game next Saturday. But La Cosa would have been missing pitcher Dave Schachman and 1st round pick Ralph Avallone. So good guy manager Jim Morris accepted a double header format for day one. The Irishman were the visitors in this one and jump out to a quick one run lead when Ryan Smith singled, advanced to second on a deep fly by Aric Bernstein, and scored on a two out single down the first baseline by Don Trifari. La Cosa tied it in the bottom with two outs when Chris Mazur hit solo a Mazuroutie. The Irish get the first two batters on in the 2nd when Ralph Aiello and Jim Morris both singled. Ralph got to 3rd but didn't score. La Cosa takes the lead in the 2nd when the crafty Shanth Subbiah singled up the middle. With two out the Irish make another costly error and Shanth comes around to score. La Cosa is up 2-1. It's Ron Liebowitz time again for La Cosa and Ron drills a hard grounder down 3rd and beats the throw to first for a leadoff single. With one out Dean Sottile singled and Shawn Spielberger beats out an infield single scoring Ron on the play. With two outs they walk Chris Mazur to load the bases and they get the next batter to ground out to end the inning. But La Cosa is up 3-1 and the Irish are looking kind of tired. They go down 1,2,3 in the 4th. La Cosa takes advantage in the 4th with the new ball. With one out Ralph Avallone singled, Bob Vogt bounced one by the outfield in center for a double scoring Ralph. Jake Spielberger singled and with two outs, holding a 4-1 lead, Ron Liebowitz comes up again with runners in scoring position. Ron does it again, beating the outfield shift for a 2 run double. The throw home was just late said the home plate umpire but many thought he looked out. La Cosa is now up 6-1. Steve Horowitz singled and this time Ryan Smith gunned down Ron's surrogate runner trying to score. Funny how Ron beat out an infield single, gets a double, but somehow La Cosa feels he needs a runner. Honestly, we have to change this rule for next year because several teams were taking advantage of this rule all season to put in faster runners for players who were not actually hurt. The rule is a courtesy rule for players who are injured, as in limping or very old. Many players have spoken to me about this ongoing issue. Getting back to the game, La Cosa is up 6-1 in the top of the 6th. With two outs Irishman Steve Deblasio, who just arrived, singled to bring up the top of the order. Ralph Fariello singled; Ryan Smith singled scoring Steve to cut the lead to 6-2. With runners on the corners the next batter flew out to end the inning. La Cosa threatens to score in the bottom of the 6th when Dave Schachman and Shanth Subbiah both singled with no outs. With one out Ryan Smith makes a great catch in left running full speed towards the fence, tipping the ball up and then catching it again before it hit the ground. (actually I am not sure which inning Ryan made that play but it was a fantastic catch). The next batter hits into a fielder's choice, so it's on to the top of the 7th with the Irish trailing by 4. Don Trifari legged out an infield single to short and Calvin Kwock singled, but the next two batters make outs bringing up manager Jim Morris. Jim singled up the middle to load the bases. Alex Lieberman singled in a run to cut the lead to 3. The Irish have the tying runs on, but the next batter flys out to end the game and the series. La Cosa Nostra, the 2nd seed, wins the Richard Palmer Cup. Again Ron Liebowitz lead La Cosa going 2-2 with 2 RBIs. Shanth Subbiah was 2-3. There were significantly less hits and less errors in this game with both teams getting just 13 each. For the Irishman, Ryan Smith was 2-2. Don Trifari, Calvin Kwock, Jim Morris and Alex Lieberman all were 2-3 in the loss. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the banquet. It was a great season with lots of balance in the league. The Irishman finished in 1st place, La Cosa Nostra won the Palmer Cup and Corleone took home the High Arc version of the Wolford Cup.
