Luck Runs Out For The Irish as La Cosa Nostra's Ron Liebowitz Rises from Zero to Playoff Hero with 5 RBI day. La Cosa was trailing 7-0 in the bottom of the 3rd when the momentium changed. The Irishman put up 5 runs in the 2nd after singles by Calvin Kwock and Jeff Brooks allowed manager Jim Morris to drive in the finals first run. Alex Lieberman(3-3) singled in another, John Deluca singled in the 3rd run and Ralph Fariello(4-4) singled in 2 more for a 5-0 lead. The Irish add to their lead in the 3rd after Aric Bernstein and Don Trifari singled, Jeff Brooks doubled in one and Ralph Aiello singled in another. The Irish are up 7-0 with one out and runners on the corners, and here is where the series changed. Jim Morris hits a short fly ball to right center and Ralph Avallone comes running in for a shoestring grab. The runner at third tags up but the runner on first is half way to second and Ralph guns him down. Ump says the run doesn't count. In the top of the 4th things get sloppy for the Irish. La Cosa's leadoff batter Shawn Spielberger leads off with an on by error. Jon Drillings singles and Chris Mazur(4-4) singled in Shawn. With two outs Shanth Subbiah singled to score Jon and La Cosa cuts the lead to 7-2. The Irishman get singles by Alex Lieberman and James Morris in the bottom of the 4th, then with two outs Ralph Fariello singled but Alex is held at third. The bases are loaded but the next batter flys out to end the inning with no runs. With La Cosa's bottom of the lineup due up, the Irishman make some defensive adjustments. Bob Vogt(3-3) singled hard up the middle. Jake Spielberger followed with a single and Gary Drilling, who is playing with a bad hamstring, hits a ball just out of reach of 2nd baseman John Deluca. Hero Ron Liebowitz also singled just past the 2nd baseman and Bob and the speedy Jake Spielberger both score. Kyle Francis(2-3) singled in another, Steve Horowitz singled to make it 6 hits in a row. With one out Shawn Spielberger singled and Jon Drillings hits a sac fly to tie the game at 7-7. Chris Mazur doubles up the middle and La Cosa takes a 9-7 lead. In the bottom of the 5th the Irish get it right back as Aric Bernstein singled and Don Trifari tripled down the left field line just past the diving Chris Mazur who said he tipped it. Calvin Kwock hits a sac fly to tie the game at 9-9. The Irish D breaks down in the top of the 6th with one out Ralph Avallone singled and Bob Vogt beats out an infield single. Jake Spielberger reached on error and Ralph Avallone scored on the play. The next batter flys out to the pitcher for the second out and here comes Ron Liebowitz again. With two outs and runners on first and second, Ron singles to right and Bob Vogt races home from second. La Cosa takes an 11-9 lead. Kyle Francis reaches on another error to bring up Steve Horowitz who hits the shot of the night. Steve drives one to right center and it's over the outfielder's head for a big 2 run triple giving La Cosa a 5 run lead 14-9. The Irish fight back in the bottom of the 6th when Alex Lieberman singled, Jame Morris(2-3) singled and Matt Shupak blasts a double and two runs scored. With One out, leadoff batter Ralph Fariello singled and the Irish have runners on the corners with one out. But their next two batters make outs and they trail 14-11. La Cosa adds one more in the top of the 7th on a Dave Schachman single and they hold off the Irish in the bottom of the 7th for the 15-11 win. Errors really hurt the Irishman tonight giving up 7 unearned runs on 23 hits while La Cosa fielding was pretty solid with some great plays made by Jon Drillings, Ralph Avallone and Bob Vogt. The field was hard, dry and dusty, not the best conditions for a finals game. Kudos to Ron Liebowitz(2-3) and Steve Horowitz(2-3) on a fantastic game at the plate with some game changing hits. Ron is sure to raise his draft status for next year after this game and he had 2 more big RBIs in game two and even showed some speed, beating out an infield single. Congrats to La Cosa and manager Dean Sottile who I have to tell you is very crafty a making a lineup. He played the hot hand all season and it paid off for his team in the end. Chris Mazur lived up to his 2nd round draft pick status with a 4-4 night and some great plays in the outfield. Now let's see what happened in game two.
