Game Highlights

The Hero and the Goats. Hero Mike Kideckel's bottom of the 7th, 2 out, walk off single, saves the Pirates ship from sinking in the first round of the playoffs. The Ghost Pirates jumped out to a 4-0 lead through 4 after Greg Auerbach got things started in the top of the 2nd with a triple down the left field line. Adam Steckelman's fielder's choice got him in and it's 1-0 Pirates. In the bottom of the 3rd Neil Ascione led off with a double, Mark Davis doubled to center and Max Metz singled. Malachi Metz singled to right and the ball gets by and two more runs score. Mal is thrown out trying to score but the Pirates are up 4-0. It was smooth sailing till the 5th when the Pirate ship almost capsized. The inning started with an error and then Dave Schachman and Ralph Avallone(2-3) singled to load the bases. Manager Ryan Goodrich(2-3) singled and the Goats are on the board 4-2. Christian Hansen(2-3) singled and Frank Coppola walks. Then Eric Stivers chops a single over the pitchers head to tie the game at 4-4 and the Goats are still grazing. Chris Mazur hits a sac fly and then Steven Sroka grounded out to short and on the throw to first the runner at second takes off for third. The throw from first is wide and ends up by the tarp and another run scored. It's 6-4 Goats and the Pirates are kicking the sand. Then with two outs Jigar Desai singled off the short stops glove, Eric Buzzelli(2-2) hit a ball off the pitcher's glove that changes direction and gets past the short stop for another single. Bob Fass singled to right to score another and it's 7-4 Goats. Fred Heismeyer singled to load the bases (this is missing from the scorebook). Lee Ehudin chops one down third that somehow gets past the glove of Jason Lew and 2 more runs scored. The Goats are up 9-4 and everyone starts thinking the Pirates are sunk. Thankfully for the Pirates they had their top of the order due up and Mark Davis drills a single to center and tries for 2nd. It looks like he was going to be out on the throw but the throw is cut off by the 2nd baseman. Max Metz singled scoring Mark, Malachi singled up the middle. With runners on 1st and 2nd Dave Schachman snags Shanth Subbiah's grounder and throws to 3rd instead of trying for the double play. With 2 outs and the Pirates trailing 9-5, Dave Richmond reaches on error to load the bases. The next batter grounds to 3rd and maybe the 3rd baseman could have tagged the runner but he throws to 2nd and the hustling Dave Richmond beats the throw. A run scored so it's 9-6 Goats. Adam Steckelman hits a fly to left that pops out of the left fielder's glove and 3 more runs score and the game is now tied 9-9, what can go wrong next. But the Goats rebound and pick up two in the 6th after Ralph Avalone singled, Christian Hansen singled and with two outs Eric Stivers(2-3) singled giving the Goats a 10-9 lead. Chris Mazur(2-2) singled in a 2nd run and it's 11-9 Goats but will it hold up? The Pirates get two back after soon to be hero Mike Kideckel(4-4) singled and with two outs Mark Davis singled. Jason Lew singled to load the bases for Max Metz who singled off the 3rd baseman's glove to tie the score at 11-11. The Goats don't score in the 7th and in the bottom the Pirates have the middle of their lineup up. With one out Dave Richmond singled past third. Greg Auerbach lines a single and something crazy happens next. Adam Steckelman drops a soft single to right and Dave Richmond is held up at 3rd but the runner on 1st gets confused and doesn't run to second. So the Goats pick up a gift out and now it's two outs, the winning run at third and they elect to walk David Reiss(1-3) to pitch to Mike Kideckel who is 3-3 on the night. Mike drills his 4th single to left and the Pirates somehow get the win and keep their ship afloat in the playoffs. Needless to say manager Malachi Metz was pretty excited.
