Game Highlights
Rail Riders Storm Past the Pandas, Literally. The Riders dodged several bullets in this one and held a 6-2 lead into the 6th. When a storm rolled in and things got really dark and windy. The umps were forced to end this one early with the Panda's big sticks coming up. Unfortunately for the Pandas commish Spoto spoke to both managers before the game began and announced that this game would be official after 5. So here's what happened. The Rail Riders batted first came up empty. Jake Spielberger(2-3) singled for the Pandas. Moved to 2nd on a fielder's choice and after another fielder's choice he scored when Rob Guilbert hit a 2 out single. Riders match that in the 2nd when Joel Orris(2-2) singled, Brian Cass singled and Mark Fedele singled off the pitchers glove to score Joel. Pandas threaten in the 2nd after Tom Clougher(2-2) and Hadar Sieradzky singled, Deron Green walked to load the bases with one out. But the next batter struck out and a fly out ended the thread, Bullet #1 avoided by the Riders. 1-1 after 2. Riders Dan Ochs singled on a slow chopper to the pitcher and moved to third on Dean Sottile(2-2) singled. But Jay Glickson's liner to right was caught by a diving Clougher for the last out. With one out Jake Spielberger hits another single. The next batter grounds to the pitcher and they just miss turning a double play, so says the umpire, it was close with the runner taking a 5 foot leap for the bag. In regular speed it looked like a tie so we will have to post a super slow mo. Next batter Ryan Smith singled and with 1st and 3rd and the Pandas 4th batter is up. The Riders dodge their 2nd bullet when a fly out to right ends the inning. 1-1 after 3. In the 4th Riders catch a break as leadoff batter Kay Klele reached on error. Don Trifari(2-2) singled and Jared Kuropatkin gives the Riders the lead with a single to center. With one out Joe Orris singled to load the bases and Brian Cass hits a sac fly on a diving catch by the Panda center fielder. However a hustling Victor Cardona was also able to score from 2nd. Riders add two more and are up 4-1. In the bottom of the 4th Panda's get their leadoff batter on again. It's another Spielberger this time, John who singled to center. Tom Clougher doubled and now the Pandas have 2nd and 3rd again again with only one out. For the 2nd time the next Panda batter strikes out. The next batter flys out and the Pandas come up empty again. In the 5th Riders Mike Lawlor leads off with a line single to left. With one out the Pandas make another costly error. Another Rider run scored on a single by Ron Liebowitz. Jay Glickson sacks in another run and Riders are up 6-1. In the bottom of the 5th the Pandas get a team huddle and come out swinging. Adam Handler, Mike Sabet and Mike Cafaro all single to load the bases with no outs and the top of the Pandas order coming up. This could be trash time for the Pandas. Jake Spielber hits a sac fly to right and the Riders throw home and let both runners advance. So first base is open with one out and the next batter hit a one hopper to the pitcher. He throws quickly to first to the get the out but the runner on 2nd thought he was forced and heads to third. The runner at 3rd is held up and now must try for home and gets thrown out by 10 feet by Casey Nix with the Panda's 3rd and 4th batters on deck. Riders dodge more than a bullet and hold a 4 run lead, 6-2 after 5. Now its starting to get pretty dark and we go to the 1-1 count (probably an inning too late). The Riders got a few batters on but didn't score and are now near their bottom of the order when they come up in the 7th. The Panda on the other hand have the meat of the order coming up with Ryan Smith leading off in the bottom of the 6th. Ryan Smith steps into the batter's box but out of nowhere a storm blows in and it gets really dark and windy in just a few minutes. So that's it, game over the umps had to call it. Riders literally storm into the 2nd round of the playoffs. Note: by rule we cancel the top of the Riders 6th inning but they still win because we played 5 complete innings. If the Riders had scored in the 6th their runs would not have counted. So Riders dodge their 4th bullet and advance to play the 1st place Mets, 10:30 on Saturday. Special thanks to Lee and Seth for umping.
