Game Highlights
Macon Takes Down the Riders on an "Ugly Play" That Changed the Momentum. In the first game of the Palmer Cup Finals, the Riders were holding a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the 5th inning. With two outs and a man on 3rd the Macon batter (unnamed) hits a grounder down third that the Rider's 3rd baseman fields moving toward first and then continues running to first with the ball. The Macon runner was not initially running so the Rider fielder kept running towards first, I guess to avoid making a possible bad throw ( which has happened a few times before lol). The Macon batter then throws the bat at the Rider fielder who was a few steps from the bag and he throws the ball underhand to the Rider 1st baseman who was behind the bag. The two Rider fielders' collide and the 1st baseman has to push the 3rd baseman out of the way to touch the white base with his hand which, from the replay, he did before the runners foot hits the WRONG bag. There could have been some interference also with the runner's bag. The play was a mess and pretty ugly from a fielder, batter and umpire perspective. Both umpires missed calling the bat being thrown at the fielder, which is a clear rule violation and the runner stepping on the wrong base (which is a judgment and you can't protest that call). Plus the runner was actually out by replay. The bat bring thrown by rule should result in an interference call, a dead ball, and possible player ejection. The Bacon runner at second advanced to third during the commotion and the Macon batter-runner left the bag and was walking back to the bench. Obviously thinking he was out. While the play on video is both embarrassing and laughable at the same time, by rule the Riders could elect to protest the game since the entire play was caught on the replay camera and the umpires did not call the play by rule. If the protest is approved the game would revert back to that spot in the game and continue. I am not sure exactly how our LVC rules handle protests anymore but in the ASA manual the manager had to write the protest in the scorebook which we no longer keep. This is a rules challenge and rule interpretations can be protested, please don't get mad at me for reporting this, it's in the official rules book. Not sure if manager Sottile will pursue this path. The Riders fielder may have made a bad judgment but to avoid a wild throw with a runner on 3rd, maybe it wasn't as bad as it seemed. But he didn't break any rules by running to first. Maybe the funniest part of this play was that the batter was awarded a single in the book and given an RBI, lol. Anyway after this umpire mishap, Macon had tied the game and was a bit fired up about the play. In the 6th, with the score tied, Kay Kiele leads with a single and with one out Jared Kuropatkin(2-3) singled. A deep fly out advanced the runners and Joel Orris comes up with a big 2 out, 2 RBI single to put the Riders up by 2. In the bottom of the 6th with one out Jason Crimmins singled to right. Steve Deblasio hit a ball that poped out of the left fielder's mit for a single. Then Brian Guatta hit a ball to right that landed in that corner of the park between the two fences for a double. But the biggest shot of the game was Mark Armelino who doubled over the left fielder's head to put Macon up by one. Matt Eisenberger's grounder to a high bounce and scored another run. Rich Fardo singled in Matt and Macon is up 5-8 and that's how it ended. This is a game that will be remembered for a long time, lol. Both teams meet tomorrow night at 4, weather permitting.
