Mud Hens Rule the Roost with 12-11 come from Behind Win over the Ghost Pirates. The Pirates are playing their first game without their star 3rd basemen and leading hitter Jason Lew who is recovering at home. I don't have any status on if/when he might be back. The Pirates are also missing their starting pitcher and the versatile Mark Davis is on the rubber and throwing strikes. The Pirates sail away with 9 runs and take a 9-3 lead after just two innings. They combined for 8 team hits, Mark Davis(1B),Malachi Metz(1B,2B), Max Metz(1B,1B), Shanth Subbiah(1B), Greg Auerbach(2B) and Justin Shupack(1B) in just two innings but only manage 7 more hits the rest of the game. That gave the Hens time to roost and they started warming up in the 3rd after Jeff Brooks led off with a walk. Those leadoff walks always seem to come back to get you and sure enough the Hens start producing runs. Greg Espersen singled and Aric Bernstein walked on 4 pitches (not sure if that was intentional). WIth bases loaded the veteran Bruce Dostal singled in two runs. Jim Morris singled in another, Patrick McNamara another and Dave Jensen also singled in the innings 5th run. The Hens pull to within 1, 9-8. The Pirates don't score in the bottom and the Hens tie the game in the 4th when Greg Espersen(3-4) tripled and scored on a single by Aric Bernstein. The Pirates steal the lead again in the 4th then Neil Ascione leads off with an on by error, Mark Davis(3-4) singled and scored when Max Metz hit his 3rd single. The Pirates add another in the 5th when David Reiss also leads off with an on by error (pitchers hate those as well) and with 2 outs Jeff Shupack singled and his son Justin followed his fathers footsteps with a single which extended the Pirates lead to 11-9 lead. In the 7th, trailing by 2 the Hens get their last batter Heath Waldorf on with a lead off single. With one out Greg Espersen singled and with 1st and 2nd the Pirates elect to walk Aric Bernstein who gets 2nd base pushes Heath home. So with 2nd and 3rd the Pirates also walk Bruce Dostal to load the bases and manager Jim Morris works an RBI walk to tie the game. Craig Engelhardt hits a fielder's choice that scored a run and the Hens are back up 12-11. Unfortunately for the Pirates they are past the middle of their lineup and go down 1,2,3 to end the game. The Hens recover from that shellacking from the Patriots and comeback to edge the Pirates and take possession of 2nd place in the standings.
