Best Game of the Year So Far and Phil Wolford was there. In a back and forth game Rooney's found themselves trailing by 4 in the bottom of the 7th with 2 outs and nobody on. Could they make the miracle comeback? Let's find out what happened. The game started with some runs by both teams in the 1st. D'Jais Mark Spotto(3-4) singled on the first pitch, Jason Crimmins(5-5) singled and Nick Adams(3-3) walked to load the bases. Paul Martino singled to score just one run and D'Jais is up 1-0. In the bottom Mark Davis(4-5), Rich Cobuzio(4-5), and Brad Hartung(3-4)all single to tie the score. Kevin Zabransky singled and Greg George hit a sac fly to put Rooney's up 2-1. D'Jais Dave Picon singled with two outs in the 2nd, Mark Spotto singled but they don't score. Rooney's gets a big game from the late arriving Chris Capobianco(3-4) who singled to start the bottom of the 2nd. With one out Mark Davis singled, Rich Cobuzio singled and Brad Hartung hit a sac fly, but that's all. Rooney's is up 3-1 after 2. In the 3rd Phil Wolford shows up and the D'Jais start spinning up the hits. Jason Crimmins singled, Nick Adams walked again and with two outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd, John Deluca hits, what could have been the hit of the game. He singled scoring Jason while Nick raced home from second trying to beat the throw from left fielder Rich Cobuzio. He didn't, but the catcher didn't handle the scoop and D'Jais ties the score 3-3. Rooney's creeps ahead again in the bottom when the hot Z-Man, Kevin Zabransky(4-5) singled, Greg George singled, Dave Reiss singled to load the bases with no outs. Chris Capobianco (remember the name) singled in the go ahead run and Rooney's is up 4-3. In the 4th Dave Picon works a big lead off walk. Mark hits the Spotto on the fence in right and the ball ricochets off and goes out of play for a double. Dave Auerbach drills a liner that Brian Kelly snagged at third, one of about 4 great plays Brain made in the game. Jason Crimmins lined a shot at second that was almost snagged by Chris but at least he saves a run. Dave Picon scored and Mark moves to third. Then with two outs the hot Nick Adams singled to give D'Jais back the lead 5-4. (Nick is still withholding his urine sample). It could have been a bigger inning for D'Jais but Z-Man came up with some big pitches. Rooney's has the top of their order up in the bottom but can't score. Then D'Jais takes advantages in the 5th when Craig Engelhardt gets on by error with one out. Daron Green singled, then with two outs Z-Man walked Mark Spotto to load the bases for Dave Auerbach. Kevin keeps Dave in the park again, but this time he lined a single to left that scored just one run. But Jason Crimmins singled in another and Brad Bennis walked with the bases loaded to bring home one more. The clutch Nick Adams singled and Rooney's outfield did a great job keeping these singles to just one run each. But D'Jais picks up 4 more to take a 9-4 lead into the bottom of the 5th. Things are not looking good for Rooney's at this point and even Phil left when his ride showed up. But Kevin Zabransky singled to start the bottom of the 5th and Tony Garrett goes in to run for Kevin. Greg George singled and Tony moved to second. The next batter hit a fly ball to left and Tony, who was already thrown out in the 4th for going over the Calahan line gets picked off going back to second. It was a slow walk off the field for Tony who was 0-3 with two pickoffs. So Tony headed for the locker room to change his shirt and hat and came back with a brand new look! Rooney's falied to score in the 5th but thankfully Z-Man shuts down the D'Jais bats 1,2,3 in the 6th. Rooney's is down by 5 with the top of the order coming up. Mark Davis singled and Rich Cobuzio hit a shot back to Paul Martino that almost took his head off. It looks like Rich, who drove all the way back from the shore, has gotten his swing back. But Paul caught this one for an out. Brad Hartung singled, Tony (new look) Garrett steps in and gets his first hit of the game. Kevin Z-Man Zabranski dropped in a blooper on the right field line for a run. After 6 it's D'Jais up by 4, 9-5. D'Jais has a chance to pad the lead with their top of the order coming up, but again Z-Man shuts them down 1,2,3 to keep Rooney's slim hopes alive. So it's on to the bottom of the 7th with Rooney's trailing 9-5. They are deep in their lineup and the first two batters make outs. So it's two outs and no runners on and the number 9 batter Chris Capobianco, I told you to remember his name, is up. Chris keeps the game alive with a huge single up the middle. Now Kevin Jr is up and the beer and the sun from the volleyball games was taking it's toll. To make matters worse, Kevin Sr stepped on his foot in volleyball and broke his toe. The last time up Jr struck out swingging and didn't look good. But some how Jr manages to work a two out, full count walk, bringing up the top of the order and all the hot Rooney's bats. Rooney's is not dead yet. Mark Davis singled up the middle and Rich Cobuzio lined a single to right for a run. Rooney's is taking no chance on the bases, taking one base at a time. Brad Hartung is up next and singles up the middle, it looked like it just nipped the top of Mark Spotto's glove. Rich Cobuzio moves to second as the tying run. Manager Tony Garrett steps in with his teams Wolford cup hopes hanging on his new wardrobe. Tony ground a ball just off the 3rd baseman's glove and both runs score to tie the game at 9. The heckle bench was going wild as Kevin Sr steps in. He could win the game with hit. It didn't happen so it's on to extra innings. Jason Crimmins leads off the top of the 8th with a single. With one out Nick Adams singled. Paul Martino hit a deep fly moving up the two runners, but Brian Kelly comes up with another big scoop at third and Rooney's needs just one run to win in the bottom of the 8th. The have speedy Greg George leading off and Greg singled between third and short. Dave Reiss hits a single up the middle and Greg George tries to take third. The throw from the outfield sails high over Brad Bennis's glove at third and out of play. Oh no, it's game over for D'Jais. Rooney's completes the improbable comeback. What a great game! Too bad Phil had to leave but it's up on the PPV if you want to watch the full game.
