Triton Oyster's shuck the Mike Metzless Headliner's in 8 Inning Comeback. In an entertaining Friday night battle that featured timely hitting, long balls and some very interesting rule discussions that frankly nobody really knows the answer, the Oyster's were able erase a 10-3 5th inning deficit led by leadoff batter Andy Reiser, who was 5-5 with 4 runs scored including the 8th inning game winner. The Headliner's came out punching with runs in the first 4 innings, led by manager Lou Coppa who was 5-5 with a 3 run homer in the 3rd on a ball that started foul but curved back just inside the pole. Dean Sottile also had an impressive night, with 3 hard singles and a triple over the left center fielder's head. But the shot of the night was in the 7th with one out. Triton had just tied the game at 11 after Don Trifari and Derek Margiotta both singled in runs. That brought up RJ Leonard with two on and RJ crushed a deep 3 run homer putting Triton up 14-11. Could that be enough to hold off the Headliner's in the bottom of the 7th? Bob Vogt and Mike Cafaro both singled, then after one out Greg Kohn singled to load the bases for Malachi Metz who dove a deep right center triple over the outfielder's head. But here's where things got interesting. The runner ahead of Malachi, Greg Kohn put on the breaks and stops just before the Calahan line (or did he?). He slides back to third and both Greg and Malachi occupied the same base. Then, thinking he is out Greg Kohn walks off the base and back to the bench. According to the rule the led runner is safe and the trailing runner would be out. But what if he went over the Calahan line? Could you tag the trailing runner first, then the lead runner and get a double play since he went over the Calahan line? What about if he tagged the lead runner first, would the trailing runner now be able to occupy the base? Since it would have been the last out of the game, we just kept playing and would figure it out if it mattered after the game. So with Malachi at third, Bob Pliska singled and Malachi tied the game. So now we are in extras and go to a 1-1 count. With two outs and nobody on, the hot Andy Reiser singled. Vince Wolleon singled and Don Trifari blooped a single over second to put Triton up 1. Derek Margiotta (4-5) singled to put Triton up 2 and that's all they needed as the Headliner's went down 1,3,4 in the bottom of the 8th to give Triton the 16-14 win. Looking back at the rule and the video here is how I would summarize the play at third. It looked like the runner stopped just short of the Calahan line but then stepped on it when he turned to go back to third. Then it looked like the 3rd baseman tagged the lead runner first and then tagged the trailing runner. If that were the case and the runner did go over the Calahan line, then I think Malachi would be safe. If the runner didn't go over the Calahan line and if the 3rd baseman tagged him first, it wouldn't matter since by rule the trailing runner is out. When the lead runner abandoned the base he is now out, double play. If the runner went over the Calahan line and the 3rd baseman tagged the trailing runner first, then he could tag the lead runner who would then be out because he went over the Calahan line. (I THINK?). Anyway enough rule talk, it was a great game and Sameer Sawe even hit his first career double. The top of Triton's order was hot going 19-23 (Andy Reiser 5-5, Vince Wolleon 3-5, Don Trifari 4-4, Derek Margiotta 4-5, RJ Leonard 3-4). The Headliner's out hit Triton overall 29-24.
