The Irishman Cut the Cake in 8, 6-5. Johnny Cakes were rising in the 1st with a big 5 run inning, but the Irish D led by Ralph Fariello shut the door and Cakes fell flat. There was an unfortunate injury in the bottom of the 8th, here's what happened. This was a big game with lots of playoff implications. If Johnny Cakes wins, they would clinch the final playoff spot, otherwise it could end with a possible 3 way tie. The Irish had only 9 players while Johnny Cakes was batting 12. The Johnny Cakes were hot in the 1st and their first 6 batters didn't make an out. John Boeckel singled, Pete DeFrank walked and John Weiner singled in the 1st run. Clay Petry singled up the middle to score another. Lee Udin doubled in the gap and pushed accross 2 more. Sammer Sawe knocked in another with a fielder's choice. Johnny Cakes was fired up but that would be the last time they scored. The Irish fight back for 3 in the bottom of the 1st when Ralph Fariello singled and with one out Aric Bernstein(2-3) reached on error. Don Trifari(4-4) singled to load the bases and the next batter grounded to 3rd but it got by the fielder for 2 runs. Ralph Aiello singled and Jim Morris hit a fielder's choice with an RBI. It's Cakes 5-3 after 1. Things get really slow for the next 4 innings. In the top of the 6th JC threatens to extend their lead. John Boeckel doubled to left and tagged on a fly out by Pete DeFrank(1-2). The next batter grounded to first and Steve Deblasio makes are great stop, then he checks the runner at third while running towards the batter for the tag out. John is stuck on third. The Irish walk Clay Petry and the next batter flys out. In the bottom of the 6th the Irish Matt Shupak led off with a single. With one out Jeff Brooks hit the 1st of his two triples. Matt scored and Jeff tied the game after Aric Bernstein singled him home. Don Trifari singled moving Aric to 3rd with 1 out, but Paul Martino pitched out of the jam. So it's 5-5 as we move to the 7th. Ryan Goodrich(2-3) led off with a double but was stranded at 2nd base. The Irish go down 1,2,3. So we go to extra's and start with a 1:1 count. Matt Siekierka led off with a single. Then with 1 out the Irish turn a big double play to end the inning. In the bottom of the 8th Jeff Brooks hits a shot in the right center gap. John Boeckel dives for it but can't make the catch. When he rolled over to field the ball he grabbed his shoulder in pain. Jeff winds up on 3rd with a triple. John is forced to leave the game and said he might have cracked something. With the winning run at 3rd, Johnny Cakes walks both Aric Bernstein and Don Trifari bringing up Steve Deblasio with no outs. Steve rips a hard liner to 3rd that pops out of the 3rd baseman's glove, the Irish win their 14th game, 6-5 in 8 innings. So Johnny Cakes finishes with a 7-9 record and needs some help from La Cosa against Winter Hill to make the playoffs. La Cosa needs a win to lock up the 2 spot and a first round bye. Let's all pray that John has a speedy recovery.
