Battle for 1st place. La Cosa Nostra had a double header scheduled tonight and the Irishman were only fielding 7 regulars to start. It was a scorching 97 degrees at 5 PM and there was talk about rescheduling this one so La Cosa would have just one game at 6:30 when it was cooler. But La Cosa wanted to play the shorthanded Irish and then play the last place Medigans in the second game at 6:30. So let's see how it worked out. The first inning was hot but not any bats and neither team scored. In the 2nd La Cosa Nostra got on the board when rookie Chris Mazur(3-3) the games MPV, doubled. Jake Spielberger walked and Kyle Francis singled with one out to load the bases. Steve Horowitz hit a fielder's choice that scored the first run. The next run scored on a throwing error which would have been the 3rd out. Ron Liebowitz(2-2) singled in a 3rd run and La Cosa is up 3-0. In the 3rd La Cosa takes advantage of a few more errors. With one out Dave Schachman(3-3) doubled to right. Jon Drillings singled and Chris Mazur singled in a run. La Cosa is up 4-0. Now with two outs Gary Drillings hits a ball to short that is misplayed and the throw to second is wide and the ball sails into right field. The runner appears to have collided with the second baseman on the play but there is no call. Two more runs scored on the error and Gary Drillings advanced to second. Kyle Francis(2-3) singled to score another run and La Cosa goes up 7-0 with only 2 being earned runs. The Irishman get a pep talk from their coach about their play and it worked, La Cosa didn't score another run the rest of the game. In the 5th the Irishman finally get a run when Ryan Smith hustled out grounder to 2nd and just gets in when the first baseman's foot comes off the bag. Video review shows it was a nice call by the ump Brian Cass. Don Trifari(3-4) doubled to center and the ball skipped by the fielder allowing Ryan to come all the way around to score. La Cosa is up 7-1. In the top of the 6th Dave Kaiser works a one out walk. Sub Mark Spotto singled and James Morris who came late singled in Dave. Ralph Fariello walked and Ryan Smith drills a single to right to score two more. The next two batters fly out, so it's La Cosa 7, the Irishman 4 and that's how it ended. So the Irishman lose this game by 3 and the first time these two teams played the Irishman won by 6. So the Irishman hold the run differential tie breaker if it comes into play. La Cosa now in 1st place with an 8-1 record while the Irishman drop to 9-2. But La Cosa is pretty tired. Do they have enought gas to beat the Medigans and stay in 1st place?
