Aric Bernstein's Two Circus Catches Stop Two Gambino Comeback Rallies. In what some might call the most entertaining game of the year so far, the Irishman edged out the Gambino Family in the heat, 12-11 in extra innings. With the temps soaring in the 90s at 12:00 the Irishman took an early 3-0 lead. After a leadoff error Ryan Smith(4-5) singled and Don Trifari(2-3) singled to load the bases. Ralph Fariello singled in the games first 2 runs. Don tagged up from 2nd on a deep fly ball by Steve Deblasio and scored on a single that hit pitcher Brian Quinn on the foot, off the bat of Jim Morris. In the 2nd the Gambinos get two back after Levi Henninger walked and Vince Wolleon tripled. Marty Eagan hit a ball back to the pitcher and Vince took off for home. The throw was wild and Vince scored to make it 3-2. Steve Deblasio gets the run back with a solo homer in the 4th and the Irish are back up 4-3. They pick up 2 more in the 5th when Ryan Smith singled, Aric Bernstein doubled, Don Trifari hit a sac fly and Ralph Fariello singled. Irish are up 6-3. The Irish add two more in the 7th when Ryan Smith singled with two outs, Aric Bernstein singled and Don Trifari singled down third to score Ryan. Ralph Fariello singled in Aric and those two runs with two out would turn out to be huge. In the bottom of the 7th Brian Quinn(3-4) and Bret Hartman(3-4) both single. With one out Kay Kiele singled and with the bases loaded Rob Guilbert drives one into the courts for 2 runs. It's now 8-5. Dave Auerbach is now the tying run at the plate and already has a 4 pitch walk so would get 2nd if he is walked again. Dave drives a ball to deep left. It's back, back, way gone, but it's foul. Dave then walks on the next pitch. Now the tying run is at 1st. The next batter hits an infield fly and with two outs Vince Wolleon comes to the plate. Vince hits a ball down the 1st baseline that Steve Deblasio stops but bobbles. The pitcher runs over to cover first and here comes the throw. They would have had him but the throw goes behind Don and everone is safe. Marty Eagan singled to left and Dave Auerbach tries to score the tying run from second. The relay throw is low and from the replay it looked like Dave would have beat the throw anyway. The game is now tied 8-8. With the winning run at second Aric Bernstein makes a diving circus catch on Tom Clougher to end the inning. Game is tied 8-8 and were going into extra innings in this heat. Jim Morris gets a big leadoff single for the Irish and Alex Lieberman walks. Then with one out managers Mike Levine tried to talk to his pitcher who turned his back and walked twards 2nd base, lol. The next batter hits into a fielder's choice and that brings up Dave Kaiser with 2 outs and runners at the corners. Dave drops a single to right to score Jim. Calvin Kwock walks to load the bases for Ryan Smith. Ryan drills a ball between 1st and second and winds up with a 3 RBI triple. The Irish are up 12-8 but will it be enough. The Gambinos again get their first two batters on. Brian Quinn slapped a single in the big hole at 2nd and Bret Hartman lined a single to left. That brings up Mike Levine with 1st and 2nd, no outs. Mike swings at the first pitch and hits the ball up the middle. The Irishman have a fielder right behind second and he miss plays the ball and every is safe. Now it's bases loaded, top of the order and here comes the play that everyone is still talking about. Kay Kiele blasts a deep shot way back in left center and Aric Bernstein some how chases it down for the first out. One run scores on a tag and the throw coming back to the pitcher goes out of play. So a second run score and the runner from first goes to third. With the score 11-10 Rob Guilbert hits a sac fly. So now there is 2 outs and Dave Auerback is up and the Irishman elect to pitch to him. Dave hits a single. The next batter grounded out to short and the Irishman hold on for the win. Great game by both teams in the heat. Special thanks to Pat McNamara for umping in the heat after playing two games already that morning.
