Marshall Baines 1st LVC Homer Helps Johnny Cakes Rise To Beat Goodfellas 10-4. Marshall Baines couldn't have picked a better time to hit his first LVC homer. Johnny Cakes desperately needed a win to keep their slim playoff hopes alive. They have the toughest schedule coming up having to play Goodfellas twice, the Irishman and La Cosa. Goodfellas needed this win to move into a tie for 2nd with La Cosa. With the score tied 2-2 in the bottom of the 4th, the innings started with a throwing error giving JC a baserunner with no outs. Marshall Baines then hit the shot that got the Cakes all greased up. The homer to left center was a 2 run shot that put Johnny Cakes up 4-2 and you could feel the momentum shifting. Goodfellas had 1st and 2nd in the top of the 5th, but Pete DeFrank made a diving play at 2nd to rob Jon Mach of a single. The ball came out of his glove and rolled to the 1st baseman who threw the runner out at second. So Goodfellas didn't score and Johnny Cakes would rise to the occasion with John Boeckel(2-2) leading off the bottom with an infield single. With the ball sitting at the edge of the infield John takes off for 2nd and after a crazy head first slide the ball sails into right field and John takes 3rd. John Weiner (3-3) singled to put JC up 5-2. Clay Petry(2-3) singled and with one out Pete DeFrank(2-3) singled to load the bases for Ryan Goodrich. Ryan singled and 2 more runs scored. Paul Martino's fielder's choice plated another run and JC is up 8-2. Goodfellas get to back on sac flys by Derek Lynn and Dave Reiss but Johnny Cakes responded with 2 more in the 6th after Sameer Sawe, Adam Handler and Jigar Desai all single to load the bases. John Boeckel and John Weiner both hit sac flies. Come to think of it, this lineup looks like a Johnny Cake with John Weiner batting 1st and John Boeckel battings last and the rest of the team as the filling. It was a big win for JC as they move up to a 3 way tie for the 6th and final seed in the playoffs. Can they keep it going Sunday night against La Cosa Nostra.
