Game Highlights

Macon Bacon Serves Up a Championship, Family Style. In what was probably the craziest box score of the year, Macon's outstanding defense (including 4 spectacular plays) was the difference in this game as they take down the Rail Riders 10-7. Macon was a family team with 4 father and son pairs, Chris and Mark Armelino, Danny and co manager Ralph Fariello, Mike and Rich Fardo and of course, Steve and his son Joey who was at all games with his Macon jersy on and coaching the bases. So there were some great family memory's had in this one. This may have been the first game all season where there was only 1 extra base hit, a Ron Liebowitz double in the 7th. The Rail riders outhit Macon 14 to 11 (really 13-9 if you count plays that could have been made). Macon was batting only 11 (Rich Fardo left with an injury early) and the Rail Riders had 12. Errors and walks hurt the Rail riders as Macon was patient at the plate. Macon had a big 1st inning after Ralph Aiello walked, eagle eye Ken O'Brien(2-2) down 0-2 watched several pitches just miss the board and walked as well. A fly ball to left was dropped for an error and just like that Macon has the bases loaded without a hit. Jason Crimmins singled in 2 runs, Steve Deblasio singled up the middle, Brian Guatta beat the shift with a single to center. Mark Armelino hits a sac fly and Seth Friedman(2-3) dropped an RBI single to right and Macon is up 6-0. The Riders answer with one after Jay Glickson walked, moved to 2nd on a gound ball and scored when Kay Klele singled. So after 1 its 6-1 Macon. In the 2nd Frank Chiccariello(2-3) singled under the shortstops glove and with two outs Jon Cocchio hit a high fly to left center that was going, going, and caught by Brian Cass with his back up against the fence (nice catch). Brian also made another great catch to rob Jason Crimmins in the 4th that saved another run. But the Rail Riders bats went flat for 2 innings. In the 3rd Jason Crimmins walked, Steve Deblasio(2-3) singled and Mark Armelino hits another sac fly. Seth Friedman bloops a short fly to left drops in off the charging outfielder's glove for an RBI single. Macon is up 8-1 and the Riders still have not batted around yet. Macon scored one more in the 4th on a Ken O'Brien single and in the bottom of the 4th, with the new ball, the Rider finally wake up. Jay Glickson and Don Trifari(2-3) both single. Kay Klele(2-3) singled scoring Jay. A deep fly out advances both runners. Then we have our first controversy. On a ground ball to short Kay Klele gets caught off 2nd. He gets into a rundown and Don scores. It looked like Steve Deblasio tagged Kay with the ball in his hand but he drops the ball and all runners are called safe. You will have to look at the replay, it looks like Steve dropped it when he hit the ground but it's too fuzzy to really know for sure. Joel Orris(2-3) singled off the pitcher's glove to load the bases with one out. Brian Cass singled to score K. Then came the play of the day - maybe the season. Ron Liebowitz was up with bases loaded and the Riders are down 9-4 with one out. Ron drills a 1 hopper down the line and somehow Ralph Aiello dives behind the bag to snag it on a hop. He gets up and tags first and almost get the runner at second too. Very rarely do you see someone dive and field a ball on a hop like that. Be sure to watch the replay above. So the Riders get one run but it could have been 2. So Macon is up 9-5. No scores till the 7th when Macon picks up a run off an error and the Riders are up in the bottom of the 7th trailing 10-5. Joel Orris drops in a single to right and with one out Ron Liebowitz cracks another ball down the line. This time it gets by for a double, the games only extra base hit. Mark Fedele drills a shot past 3rd and two runs score. Riders are down 10-7. With two out Bob Vogt rips a liner at Ralph at first who gets a glove on it and juggles the ball and almost makes a circus catch behind his back. The Riders bring the tying run to the plate and have the top of the order due up next, but a fly out ends it and Bacon is the 2023 Palmer Cup Champions. Some of the other great plays that Macon made in the game were Jim Gesualdo's dive up the middle to rob Dean Sottile in the 5th and Ken O'Brien had a diving grab in center to end another Rail Rider threat. A well played game by Macon in all aspects of the game and fitting for a championship trophy as well.
