Game Highlights

Everything's Jake for the Pandas Who Slide Past the Rail Riders 5-4. Jake Spielberger's 6th inning RBI triple and controversial bottom of the 7th speed slide for the win help, push the Panda's over the Rail Riders in Wolford Cup action. The Rail Riders were missing Jay Glickson and Victor Cardona and hung tough on the great fielding of Kay Klele at short who was playing with an injured shoulder. The Panda's were missing Hadar and Rob Guilbert filled in on the mound and pitched a solid game. Pandas had 10 batters and the Riders had 12. The game started with Don Trifari(2-3) leading off with a single for the Riders. Kay Klele(3-4) playing with an injured shoulder singled before the next 2 batters flew out. The next batter grounded to short and the throw to 3rd went right into the sun and blinded the 3rd baseman. With bases loaded and two outs Ron Liebowitz comes through with a 2 RBI single. Things were pretty quiet for the next 4 innings as neither team scored. The Rail Riders missed a great oppotunity in the 3rd when Dean Sottile(3-2) led off with a single, Don Trifar singled, but with 2 on and nobody out the rally ended. The Panda's got their leadoff batter on in each of the first 3 innings but couldn't get anyone past 2nd. It was getting dark already and in the 3rd we were already into the 1-1 count. In the 5th Dean Sottile beats the center fielder for a double, Don walks and Kay Klele singled to load the bases. Joel Orris hits an RBI single and Brain Cass hits a sac fly. The Rail Riders are up 4-0. In the bottom with one out the Rail Riders make their 1st error. Ryan Smith singled but gets to 2nd on an outfield error. The Pandas have 2nd and 3rd, one out. The next batter grounds to 2nd for an out but a run scores and the Pandas are on the board. In the 6th Ron Liebowitz and Mark Fedele both single with no outs, Casey Nicks walks to load the bases but the Riders don't score. Things get really interesting in the bottom of the 6th. Brad Bennis rips a liner to short that Kay Klele snagged for an out. There were some illegal pitch calls on the next two batters. John Speilberger dropped a single to left and Jake Speilberger hits the shot of the game. A liner to center that splits the two outfielders and Jakes ends up with a triple. The Pandas are down 4-2 with Jake at 3rd. Alex Lieberman singled scoring Jake and it's 4-3 Riders with Alex at first. Deron Green bloops a single to right and Adam Handler singled by 3rd to load the bases with one out. After a strike out Ryan Smith who is 3-3 is up and there is a 3rd illegal pitch call. Ryan works a full count and walks a run in to tie the game. The inning ends with the score tie 4-4. The Riders don't score in the top of the 7th. Rob Guilbert leads off the bottom of the 7th for the Pandas and bloops a single behind 2nd. Brad Bennis singled past short. The next batter flys to center and then there is a fielder's choice at second that moves the winning run to third with 2 outs. Kay's arm was too sore for him to turn and get the runner at third. With 1st and 3rd the next batter hits a 1 hopper to the 2nd baseman who lobs the ball to 2nd and it looks like a bang bang play but the runner is Jake Spielberger, perhaps the fastest guy in the league. Jake is flying and slides in hard but his front foot is way up in the air. It looks like his back foot is first to hit the bag but there is a big dust cloud and he is called safe by the umpire, much to the dislike of the Rail Riders. It was a great hustle play by Jake just to make it that close. To the umpire's credit he had a lot of close calls all game and was doing an excellent job. But everyone forgets when the game is on the line so I personally apologize to John for contesting the call. We really have to thank all our volunteer umpires, we would have far less money to spend on beer without them (although they drink most of it lol). The Pandas got robbed the first time these two teams played on a rain out in the 6th inning that allowed the Riders to advance. So this time it's the Pandas who move on to play the hot again Pigs in the semi finals.
