Game Highlights
The G.O.A.T. Yard Goats and Savanna Bananas Pack the House in Final Regular Season Game. It was standing room only last night for this highly anticipated battle for the final playoff spot. The outcome of this game would determine just about every playoff match up. The loser would be out and the winner could finish as high as the 5th overall seed. The Yard Goats manager Ryan Goodrich even brought a live goat to the field which was a treat for all the young fans. Commissioner Spoto made a great call having this game catered; after all, this is what LVC Softball is all about. A few weeks prior the Bananas were sitting near the top of the standings with an 8-4 record, but having dropped 5 of their last 6 games, when the tiebreakers were considered, they needed to win just 1 of their last 3 games to make the playoffs. This was looking like Brian Quinn's Panthers all over again, and nobody remembers that more than Jason Crimmins. Jason's walk off triple in the last inning of the Macon Bananas game really stung the Bananas, and you could just sense that history was going to repeat itself. The Goats, who everyone had written off two just weeks ago, got a new life after the 11th place Patriots upset the Bananas on Monday night. So enough with the build up, let's find out what happened. Dave Schachman(2-2) leads off for the Goats with a walk and Bob Fass gets an infield single, Fred Heismeyer singled to load the bases with no outs. One run scored on a fielder's choice and then 2 straight fly outs let the Bananas escape with only 1 run. Savanna's Clay Petry hits a one out double, Kurt Heim(3-3) followed with a double in the courts. With two outs Jason Wertheimer singled in Kurt and scored when Ken Horan singled. After 1 it's 3-1 Bananas. Goats get one in the 2nd when Chris Mazur(2-3) singled, Frank Coppola singled and Steven Sroka hit an RBI single. Then Jon Mach turns the 1st of his two double plays. In the bottom the Bananas get 2 more when Rich Heim(2-3) singled, Jon Mach hit a double, Brandon Snook singled and John Deluca had an RBI single. With two outs Ryan Coletti singled and the Bananas are up 5-2 and looking strong. The Goats keep pecking away one run per inning. Darius Jasinski gets on with an infield single, Dave Schachman(2-2) singled down the 1st baseline past a diving Hamberger. Then the Goats capitalized on the first Banana error on a throw to 2nd and pick up run number 3. The Bananas regroup and Kurt Heim(3-3) starts the 3rd with another double, Jason Wertheimer doubled scoring Kurt. Ken Horan singled and Kyle Francis had an RBI infield single. Rich Heim singled to right and the Bananas are now up 8-3 and looking like they will keep rolling. The Goats rally behind a Ryan Goodrich double that was almost caught and get some momentum when Christian Hansen blast a deep double off the left center fence. Frank Coppola hits a sac fly and the Banana lead is cut to 8-5. They go to the 1-1 count and neither team scored in the 5th inning. The Goats bring up their top of the order in the 6th and Dave Schachman stays perfect with a single to right. Bob Fass(2-3) singled and Fred Heismeyer singled to load the bases with no outs. Ralph Avallone hits a sac fly and after a fly out the Banana's are one out away from ending the ining. But an error on another throw to 2nd plates another run and extends the inning. Bob Fass scored and the throw home allows both runners to advance. So here with are with two outs and the Bananas up just 8-7, then last year's Mr September Chris Mazur grounds a single up the middle to score 2 more, the Goats are up 9-8. Another throw home allows Chris to take second where he scored on a single by Eric Stivers. Unfortunately for the Bananas they are in the middle of their order and end the game with 6 straight outs. One on a great play by Christian Hansen on a bobbled ball. Like they say, defense wins championships and Savanna let the playoffs slip through their hands tonight. More than anything it was those throws home that allowed the Yard Goats to keep taking bases and that was the difference in this game. The fans were enjoying the night and it was a great way to start the Labor Day weekend. A great day for LVC softball. Next stop, the Playoffs begin next Wednesday night. The Bananas might be out of the playoffs but don't count them out from the Wolford Cup, they have plenty of talent to rebound from this loss as both Jon Sanzone and big stick Levi Henninger were missing tonight. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Bananas in the Wolford cup finals.
