ARR! Pirates Send Patriots to the Plank with Big 7 Run 2nd. Malachi Metz's coaching debut started off with a bang, as Mark Davis(3-4) led off with an inside the park homer. Mal and Max Metz both singled but no more runs scored. Chris Stappas' Patriots storm back with 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st after Bret Hartman singled, Dave Auerbach singled and RJ Leonard tied the game with a single to left. New Team Guy Mike Bedell, who was like a vaccum at third with the glove, singled to score Dave and the Somerset Patriots enjoy their first and only lead of the game. In the top of the 2nd the Pirates fire back when Greg, the other Auerbach, singled, Abe Heller singled and Adam Steckelman singled to tie the score. Rookie Mike Kideckel singled to recapture the lead and Jason Berkowitz singled to score two more. Neil Ascione reached on error before Mark Davis doubled to right center. Jason Lew(3-4) singled scoring Neil, Malachi Metz(2-3) hit a sac fly and the Ghost Pirates sail away with 7 big runs. That took the wind out of the Patriots sails and they didn't score again till the 6th inning. The Pirates expand their territory in the top of the 6th when Adam(3-3)Steckelman singled and with two outs Neil Ascione singled to bring up Mark Davis. Mark doubled again scoring Adam, Jason Lew singled in two more before Malachi Metz says AHOY MATES and blasted a deep triple to left center. The wounded Chris Stappas, who was drilled in the thigh while pitching batting practice, finally rallied his Patriots with the pledge of allegiance in the bottom of the 6th. The Patriots responded and started taking pitchs off rookie pitcher Shanth Subbiah which led to two leadoff walks. Paul Martino singled to load the bases and Sal Hakimi plated one run with a fielder's choice. But Max Metz had the hot glove at short and the mutiny was over. The Pirates were up 12-3 before two more Patriot walks in the 7th brought up Dave Auerbach who drilled his first 2023 homer. The Pirates sail away with a 12-6 opening day victory for new manager Malachi Metz.
