Pirates Sail Away with the 2nd Seed with 8-4 Win Over the Rail Riders. Memory, Monday July 10th, Ghost Pirates are 4-6 and at the bottom of the standings, 10th place. Manager Malachi Metz could not have been too confident that his team was going to even make the playoffs. But they just got Jason Lew back from injury which was a miracle in itself. Now the regular season is over and the Ghost Pirates have just completed a 10 game winning streak and walk away with the 2nd overall seed for the Palmer Cup Playoffs. Their formula is solid defense with Lew and Auerbach at the corners. They take the extra bases whenever possible and rely on timely hitting. Tonight they were very efficient, scoring 8 runs on only 13 hits. The Riders on the other hand, looked like they saw a ghost. Except for Kay Klele who blasted 3 doubled including the hit of the night, an opposite field bomb deep into the tennis courts, the rest of the Riders looked like they were resting for the playoffs or were just tired of all the circle talk. The Pirates got some big hits from Mark Davis who lead off with a triple, Malachi Metz tripled and had an RBI double. And Shanth Subbiah, possibly the leagues toughest out, had two RBI singles and sac fly. It was a dark night from the start and we had to go to the 1-1 count in the 5th. But you know the saying; the Ghosts come out when it's dark. Congrats to the Ghosts on their 2nd place finish. Big game this Thursday for the final playoff spot. It also affects the standings for the rest of the playoff teams. So we won't know the playoff schedule till Thursday night but for now, stay in the circle, lol. Seriously, it's time to go back to the correct rules where one foot must be on the rubber or up to 10 feet behind it if the pitcher is afraid to stand closer. This is the official softball rules we have been playing for over 40 years. The pitching circle is not there for the pitcher to move around when delivering a pitch. It's for preventing base runners from advancing when the pitcher has the ball in the circle.
