Game Highlights

Somerset Gets Railroaded by the Big Cardoza 21-14. Victor Cardoza's 2 3 run HRs help the Rail Riders end their 2 game losing streak with a big come from behind victory against the 6th place Patriots. The win evens the Rail Riders record to 5-5, tie for 5th with the Iron Pigs. This was a tale of 2 games; in the first half the Patriots stormed ahead with 6 runs in the first inning and built a 13-4 lead after Dave Auerbach(3-3) had just hit a 3 run homer to end the 4th. It looked like Somerset had all the momentum and the Rail Riders were making some sloppy throwing mistakes. But the Rail Riders made several defensive adjustments that paid off. There were also some controversial calls like the interference call on a close play at 2nd with no chance for a double play but the runner on 1st was called out anyway. Then an interference that was not called on a runner trying to score while the fielder was blocking the inside corner of 3rd base. See twitter video and make your own call. After that initial surge Patriots ran out of heavy artillery and the Rail Riders get back on track in the top of the 5th. Mark Fedele got it started with a lead off single followed by singles from Jay Glickson(4-5), Kay Klele(4-5), Don Trifari(4-5) and the big blow, a 3 run bomb by Victor Cardona who came home a day early from the shore to play and had his family watching from the sidelines. That cut the lead to 13-9. Brian Cass followed Vic with a single and with one out Ron Liebowitz(3-4) drilled a single up the middle. Daniel Ochs singled, Michael Lawlor singled and now Rail Riders Mark Fedele is up for the 2nd time in the inning, trailing by 3. Mark singled in another run, Jay Glickson and Kay Klele both singled in runs to tie the game at 13-13. Don Trifari tripled in the big gap in left center and Rail Riders are up 16-13. Victor sacs in Don and Brian Cass doubled over the left center fielder's head. Bob Vogt singled and Brian is forced to make a wide turn around 3rd to avoid the 3rd baseman and the throw just nips Brian at home or immediately yells interference but doesn't get the call. But the Rail Riders are up by 4, 17-13. Somerset scores just one more time on a single by Lou Coppa and the Riders are on the storm again in the 7th. With runners on 1st and 3rd Don Trifari doubled off the fence in right and Victor Cardona, with first base open, homers for the 2nd time, another 3 run shot to push the Riders lead to 7. They hold on to win and knock the 6th seeded Patriots down to the 7th spot. Rail Riders got some great support from the top of the lineup tonight with their top 4 batters combining fro 15-19 with 13 runs and 17 RBI's It's a great time for the All Star break on Saturday with a BBQ, so far the weather is looking good, 84 and partly sunny.
