Stranger Than Fiction, Puleo's Comes Back to beat the Station 10-9. In one of the craziest endings in LVC history, Puleo's advances to the Wolford Cup finals on a walk off walk. It all started in the 1st inning after one out, Jared Kruger(3-4) singled and moved to 3rd on a Don Trifari Jr(2-3) single off the fence. A quick throw in by Chuck Puleo nabs Jr at second for the 2nd out. Don Sr(2-2) drove home Jared with an infield single and the Station is up 1-0. Marty Eagan is arriving late so the Station takes the field with only 9 and Puleo's strikes for 2 runs after Eric Rosenberg(2-3) walked, then with 2 outs Joe Giordano singled off the shortstops glove and RJ Leonard singled scoring two runs. The Station gets a lead off single in the 2nd by Steve Horowitz, then a single by Mike Levine(3-4) but strand Steve at third. Puleo's doesn't score in the bottom and the Station ties it in the 3rd when Jared Kruger singled and scored on a double down the left field line by Don Trifari Sr. Score tied 2-2. In the 4th Puleo's gets their lead off batter on by error, then RJ Leonard walks and with one out and runners on the corners Steve Horowitz stabs a hard liner at second and doubles off the runner at first. Score still tied at 2-2. In the 5th both teams have some defensive trouble, the Station has the top of the order up and Dave Richmond singled, Jared reached on Error and Don Jr takes a 5 pitch walk to load the bases. Puleo's walks Don Sr on 4 very short pitches to score a run, Lance Zacker sacs in a second run, then an error allows a third run to score. Steve Horowitz singled in another and with two outs Mike Levine crushes a double over the left fielder's head to score run number 5, the Station is up 7-2. Puleos gets a one out walk to Dave Kaiser followed by a Joel Orris single up the middle that went off the pitcher's glove to second and Steve Horowitz tried to field at 2nd and reinjured his hamstring. Eric Rosenberg singled down the left field line to load the bases, Adam Steckelman singled in one run, Mark Spotto singled in two more and Joe Giordano(2-3) sacked in the 4th run, the Station leads 7-6. In the 6th with one out Jared Kruger singled and Don Jr stepped up for a short pitch and crushed a 2 run homer. Don Sr was waked again on 4 short pitches, Lance Zacker singled moving Don Sr to 3rd with one out but he doesn't score. The Station leads by 3 9-6. Puleo's gets a leadoff double down the left field line by Al Puleo and a bad relay throw puts Al on third. Al scores on an infield out by Vince Wolleon, the Station's lead is cut to 9-7. They get a one out single by Mike Levine(3-4) but don't score so it's on to the bottom of the 7th with Puleo's top of the order coming up. The first batter grounds out to the pitcher and Adam Steckelman works a walk on some very close pitches. Mark Spotto jumps on the first pitch and ties the game with a homer to left, then comes the infamous leaf call that ended the Station's Cup run. With one out, score tied and no body on, Joe Giordano hits a high fly ball down the left field line but in foul territory. Ralph Aiello comes running all the way from deep left to make a great catch but on the way down the ball grazed one leaf and it was ruled dead by the umpires. Joe singles on the next pitch to center and another infamous play occurs, something I have not seen before. The Station's short stop, let's his glove fly off on the cut off to second, both the 2nd baseman and pitcher were ready to field the ball coming in but the shortstops glove tips the ball while off his hand. Even though the contact was not going to prevent any kind of over throw the umpire ruled that the batter gets 2 bases from the time of the touch and puts the winning run at 3rd base. Now there was some discussion about this and after reading an ASA Rulebook tonight it states that if any equipment or glove strikes a ball after being detached from the fielder the runner will be awarded 3 bases if it was a batted ball, and two bases if it was a thrown ball. The rule states that the 2 bases will be determined from the time of the throw (leaving the outfielders hand), not from the time of the ball touching the detached glove. That part of the rule was not discussed and could have very well put the runner on 2nd and not third. With the winning run now at third the Station elects to intentionally walk RJ Leonard and after some further discussion the Station (majority) elects to also walk Al Puleo to load the bases. Chuck Puleo walks on 4 pitches and the game is over. It was a great game with a bazaar ending.
